What are State of Hawaii Driver Education Requirements for Teens Under 18?

30-hr Classroom Course for Teens

The classroom course must be 30 hours.  The course must be conducted in no less than 6 weeks with class hours no more than 5 hour per week.

Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Training:

The BTW training must be conducted in no less than 6 weeks with each lesson no longer the 1.5 hours.

Practice Hours:

The student must practice and additional 50 hours, 10 of which must be at night. The 6 hours of  lesson time with the BTW instructor cannot be applied to the 50 practice hours.  The student must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old.  Between 11:00 pm and 5:00 am the licensed driver must be a parent or guardian.  Parents be sure to go to the Helpful Links & Documents page to download, print and use the Behind the Wheel Training Tips for Parents brochure.

Acknowledgement of Driving Practice Affidavit:

A notarized affidavit of above need to be submitted to the teen's BTW instructor.  Go to Helpful Links & Documents page to download a copy.

What are Accurate Driving Terms and Conditions?

Rules for Classroom Behavior:

  • Do not cheat on any tests  
  •  Do not damage any property  
  •  Do not fight with another student  

A violation of any of these rules will result in expulsion from Accurate Driving's driver education 30-hour class.  No refund will be issued for expelled students.  Expelled students cannot attend any driver education class conducted by Accurate Driving anywhere else in the future. 

Additional Rules for Classroom Behavior:

  •  Stay Focused, Alert, and Non-Disruptive
  •  Follow all the instructor’s directions  
  •  Do not use any electronic device during class, during breaks is okay  

Additional Rules for Classroom Behavior (continued):

A violation of any of the Additional Rules for Classroom Behavior will result in graduated penalties:

  1. The first penalty will be a warning.
  2. The second penalty the student is suspended from that day's session and will be required to make-up the session in a future class.
  3. The third penalty the student is suspended from the class and will be required to make up all previously attended sessions.

Classroom Drop Off and Pick Up Rule:

Classroom students drop off and pick up is  curbside only.  Do not use any driveways or parking areas of 1113 S. King Street, or any surrounding business parking lots.  Violation of this rule will result in the student being suspended from that day's session.  The student will then be required to make-up the session in a future class.

To receive a Certificate of Completion Classroom:

  1. The student must complete all 30 hours (12 sessions) of the classroom training. It is the responsibility of the student and student’s family to keep track of the student's attendance. We suggest making a log to keep track of classes completed and classes to make up.  
  2.  The student must pass the Final Exam.  If the student fails the Final Exam, they will be required to pass a make-up exam.

If you missed session(s), please do not just 'show up' to a session in another class.  Make-up sessions must be pre-arranged and confirmed.

MAKE-UP SESSIONS:

To make up a missed session(s), go to the Class Schedules 

page, find the missed session(s) number and date(s) of that class.  EMAIL us at: lokino@hawaii.rr.com.  Give us: your Name, Class# you are from, and the Date and Session# you want to attend.  An email confirmation will be sent that you are accepted into that class to make-up the session(s) missed.


Please do this as soon as possible.  If the class is full you may have to wait longer for a future class. 

To receive a Certificate of Completion Behind-The Wheel training:

  1. The student must complete all 6 hours of BTW training with a State of Hawaii certified BTW instructor.
  2. A notarized affidavit stating of practice driving hours must be submitted to the teen's behind-the-wheel instructor.   Go to Helpful Links & Documents Page and open the Accurate Driving - Driving Log and Affidavit.

Lost Certificates:

If you lose a certificate you need to contact the instructor who issued it originally.  There may be a fee for the replacement.  Once a certificate is issued to you, keep it with other important documents such as birth certificate and social security card.  The most common way certificates get lost is when they are held on to by the teen driver.  The certificate will not be needed until the road test date.

6-hr Behind-the-Wheel Driving Lessons ONLY for TEENS Scheduling:

Students need to have a current Hawaii Instruction Permit.  Students will receive an email referral for the BTW lessons.  The emails will be sent sometime after session 10.  Please be patient, it may take as long as 2 weeks after session 12 to receive your referral.  Arrangements will be made with the BTW instructor regarding dates, times and locations for the lessons.  The BTW lessons cannot be completed in less than 6 weeks and each lesson cannot be longer than 1.5 hours.

Behind-the-Wheel Lessons Locations:

All our BTW instructors conduct BTW lessons starting in the Kahala area.  You will need to meet the instructor at a predetermined location.  We do not provide pick-up and drop-off service.

Behind-the-Wheel Lessons Requirements:

BTW Rules:

  • No sandals, flip-flops, tap shoes, cleats or bedroom slippers during the course. Sneakers/tennis shoes or closed toe shoes are the preferred footwear.  It is up to the instructor if you will be allowed to drive barefoot.
  • No short skirts, dresses, short shorts, or see-through tights. Blue jeans, or long shorts are the preferred dress for both male and female students. 
  •  No tanks tops, tube tops, revealing thin strapped, spaghetti straps see-through or midriff tops.

BTW Rules Continued:

  •  No using cellphones or electronic devices in the driver education car.  
  • No hats, bandanas, hoodies, do-rags, or scarves (unless for religious purpose).   Long hair must be kept from falling into student's face.
  • No sagging pants or shorts. Undergarments and the buttocks must remain entirely covered even while seated. Rips/tears in clothing are not permitted.

BTW Rules Continued:

  •  Any student who forgets his or her permit will not be allowed to drive. 
  • Students may not operate vehicles if they are taking medication prohibiting operation of heavy equipment. 
  • No eating or drinking in the Driver’s Education car. Water bottles are permitted. 
  • Students that have a class B restriction on their permit (lenses required) will not be allowed to operate a vehicle without proper eyewear.

BTW Rules Continued:

  • Students are required to practice to proficiency what is covered in a lesson.  In a following lesson, if the student has not progressed the lesson may be rescheduled to allow more practice time.
  • Do not make a road test appointment until consulting with the BTW instructor.

Requirements for Teens to Take the Road Test:

To qualify to take the road test, the teen:

  1. Must be at least sixteen (16) years old, but under the age of eighteen (18); 
  2. Holds an instructional permit and has held that permit for at least 180 days and there is no pending violation that might result in a suspension or revocation of that person’s instructional permit.  
  3. Has Satisfactorily completesd a State certified driver’s education course and possesses the classroom (yellow) and behind-the-wheel (blue) certificates of completion.    

Hiring the BTW Instructor's Vehicle for the Road Test:

Make arrangements with your BTW instructor.  This is not included as part of your training.  Expect to pay a fee.  The fee is determined by the BTW instructor.

6-hr Behind-the-Wheel Driving Lessons ONLY for TEENS Expiration:

The BTW lessons must be started before the teen's 18th birthday.  On their 18th birthday they have moved out of the Teen category for driver licensing into the Adult category.  On their 18th birthday the BTW lessons expire, and no refund will be issued.

6-hr Behind-The-Wheel Driving Lessons Only for Adults:

Adult Behind-The-Wheel lessons cost $60.00 per hour. We require a prepayment of $376.96. including GE Tax. This amount prepays for 6 (six) hours of lessons. The Average Adult requires about 1/2 hour of lessons per year of age to reach a basic ability level. At this level the student should be able to pass the Road Test. For example if the student is 20 years old, they would require 10 hours of lessons. A  40-year-old   student would require 20 hours of lessons.   These are just averages.

Returned Checks:

A service fee of $25 will be charged on any check not honored for any reason. 

Refunds:

Refunds are only issued if the student dies or becomes disabled and cannot proceed with driver education.

Right to Refuse Service:

Accurate Driving retains the right to refuse service.
